Sam Cheng is the Open Education and Copyright Librarian at Sheridan College. In her role, she promotes faculty awareness on the benefits and opportunities of open educational resources (OER) and works with the library team to support faculty in adopting, adapting, and creating OER. She also provides copyright education to support the teaching, learning, and scholarly activities of the Sheridan community. Her research interests include experiential learning opportunities for students who work on OER projects and cross-institutional collaboration on open education initiatives. She is a member of the Ontario Colleges Open Education Working Group and the College Libraries Ontario OER Committee.
For her capstone project, Sam conducted research and wrote a research paper titled “Leveraging OER and Open Pedagogy to Promote Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) in the Classroom.” Her community resource also includes a slideshow that highlights key points made in the research paper. The purpose of this project was to enhance her knowledge on the topic so she can further develop open education initiatives and resources in a way that resonates with faculty, students, and other stakeholders at Sheridan. Other open education librarians and practitioners may find the community resource helpful for generating ideas to advocate for open education at their institutions.
