Beatrice E. Canales is an academic staff educator from San Antonio College (SAC) with a MLS from Texas Women’s University. As an academic staff member, she saw the benefits of how community college students can use OER work as marketable skills development. Marketable Skills are essential for students when transferring to universities and finding a career. Through the SPARC fellowship program, Beatrice solidify student interest in co-creation, bilingual OER work and how they market their OER work into skills in critical thinking, community, social responsibilities, and personal responsibility. Based on faculty feedback and to fulfill a Community Resource-SPARC component, a resource was created, Open Educational Resource (OER) creation = Marketable Skills Development. The capstone final report, Determining OER Student Work through a Marketable Skills Lens, a Campus Plan for San Antonio College, featured a campus plan based on experiences that Beatrice had during the course of the SPARC professional development program. In Beatrice’s experience, the SPARC program produces open education leaders, advocates and practitioners.
