Jonathan O. Cain serves as the Associate University Librarian for Research and Learning at Columbia University Libraries. In this role, Jonathan furthers the libraries’ strategic directions by providing leadership to the libraries’ research support and teaching support, copyright and information policy, digital scholarship, and access units at Columbia University Libraries.
Before joining Columbia University Libraries, Cain served as Interim Director of Digital Strategies and the Head of Data Services at the University of Oregon Libraries. Before moving into formal leadership roles, he held librarian roles at the University of Oregon and Hunter College Libraries (City University of New York).
Jonathan’s library work focuses on building access to data education, educational technologies, digital scholarship, scholarly communications, and leadership.
Outside of his work directly in libraries, Jonathan has lent his expertise to nonprofit organizations focused on access, education, and empowerment. He serves as the Vice Chair of Code for Science and Society’s Board, a member of the Open Copyright Education Advisory Network advisory board, and previously served on the Board of Directors of the Oregon Black Pioneers.
Jonathan holds an M.S.L.I.S. from Pratt Institute, an M.A. in Africana Studies from New York University, and a B.S. in Anthropology from the College of Charleston.
