Worldwide Open DataOpen Data Day is an annual celebration of open data all over the world. For the seventh time in history, groups from around the world will create local events on the day where they will use open data in their communities. It is an opportunity to show the benefits of open data and encourage the adoption of open data policies in government, business and civil society.

March 01: Community Efforts to Combat “Predatory” Publishers
2pm EST / 11am PST · SPARC webcasting platform Open AccessThe problem of "predatory" publishers is often the first issue raised by faculty in conversations about Open Access. Authors (rightly) complain of being spammed with solicitations to publish in questionable journals. Please join us on Thursday, March 1st, at 2pm EST / 11am PST for a SPARC webcast on community-based efforts to combat "predatory" publishing with representatives from these three initiatives. The discussion will focus on equipping librarians to address these quality concerns as they come up on campus.

February 10: ACRL/SPARC Forum at ALA Midwinter 2018
3-4pm · ALA Midwinter Open AccessWith the acquisition and creation of scholarly communication platforms/infrastructure by major commercial entities, the balance of influence continues to shift. This forum will bring together library stakeholders for a conversation about how the library community can reassert its influence to shape the open access publishing landscape. This session is designed to reach a broad range of librarians and other information professionals. Panelists will focus on: 1) individual action: ‘what can one person do?’; 2) local coordinated action: ‘how can one group or institution effect change?’; and, 3) collective action: ‘how can libraries work together to provide sustainable alternatives?’

December 06: Open Action Week After Action Webcast: Getting Professional Credit For Your OA Week Work

The discussion will include tips for developing a professional competency narrative, including building explanations of the impact of your work as well as ideas for translating this work into CV line items and useful material when interviewing for a new position.
