Moriana Molchanov Garcia, VPO for Open Models
Moriana Molchanov Garcia is SPARC’s Visiting Program Officer for Open Models, a one-year, part-time position from June 2022-June 2023. She also works as Scholarly Communication Librarian at River Campus Libraries, University of Rochester in Rochester, New York, supporting the university community on topics from across the scholarly communication landscape with a special focus on open scholarship.
Moriana helps SPARC increase library understanding and acceptance of funding models that provide equitable open access to both readers and authors without relying on article processing charges. She focuses on collective and “conditional open” models, such as Subscribe to Open (S2O), that make open access contingent on library support.
Moriana coordinates a working group of SPARC members interested in the issue and leveraging SPARC communication channels to build awareness of open models. She is developing web-based resources that explain the benefits of conditional open models and help accelerate library acceptance. Moriana collaborates with the SPARC Data Analysis Working Group to advance its recommendations and tools in support of innovative open models.
Prior to her current position, Moriana was the Science & Engineering Outreach Librarian at the University of Rochester. She has also worked as a Natural Sciences Liaison Librarian at Denison University in Granville, Ohio.
Moriana has a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from the Federal University of Amazonas, Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil. He has an M.S. and Ph.D. in pharmacology from the University of Sao Paulo, Ribeirao Preto, Sao Paulo, Brazil and an MLIS from Kent State University in Columbus, Ohio.
